Oh, hello! Didn't see you there. So I've been writing, writing, writing and have been neglecting my blog.
Catching up on the blogs, here are some things going on in cybertown:
My friend and author Daisy Whitney has an excellent post up about how to use video to market your novel. Definitely worth checking out.
Adam Rex is growing out his face for charity. Give! I'm hoping he'll get a handlebar moustache.
Lisa Schroeder is going to celebrate her book Far From You being included on the TAYSHAS 2010 list for teens by buying cowboy boots.
And we're ALL anxiously awaiting the return of Laini Taylor and Jim DiBartolo from NY's National Book Awards. We had a twitter anxiety attack last night waiting for tweets. I'm hoping they'll bring back LOTS of pictures.
Finally, I've been spending hours trying to put together our Tenner's Covers. Check it out:

Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit: Starring Laurie Faria Stolarz!
I'm very excited to bring you my first Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit author post! Today, I'm happy to show off the latest books from Laurie Faria Stolarz!
BLACK IS FOR BEGINNINGS is a companion book to the BLUE IS FOR NIGHTMARES series. When my editor approached me with the idea of writing a graphic novel, I was very intrigued because it gave me the opportunity to not only try something new, but to really picture the book as a movie. I have a background in screenwriting and wrote BLACK IS FOR BEGINNINGS in screenplay format, adding in ideas for illustrations and sidebars. It was an absolute thrill to write – to have the opportunity to work with an illustrator, and to see my work come to life in this way. BLACK IS FOR BEGINNINGS does not take the place of a regular prose novel in the series. It is a companion piece, complimenting the entire series as a whole. It picks up where RED IS FOR REMEMBRANCE left off, and also shows some fan-favorite scenes from the entire series.
DEADLY LITTLE LIES is the sequel to DEADLY LITTLE SECRET, (the first book in the TOUCH series). I’m really excited about it, because I think it has even more suspense, romance, and twists than the first book. It starts up a few months after Ben’s departure at the end of DEADLY LITTLE SECRET. Camelia’s spent those months researching everything she can find on psychometry (the ability to sense things through touch). See the full description below.
Lastly, the paperback of DEADLY LITTLE SECRET is out as well. For a limited time Barnes & Noble is offering an exclusive edition that has bonus excerpts from Ben’s secret blog.
Many thanks again for this opportunity to chat!
The BLUE IS FOR NIGHTMARES series that put a spell on more than half a million readers continues – in graphic novel format! Prophetic nightmares. Near-brushes with death. Killers pursuing her and her friends. Stacey Brown knows that being a hereditary witch isn’t all it's cracked up to be.
All she really wants to do is work things out with Jacob and figure out what to do with the rest of her life. But before Stacey and Jacob can have a future, they must face their pasts. BLACK IS FOR BEGINNINGS reveals the never-before-seen backstory - and what lies ahead - for the young, spellcasting lovers.
BLACK continues the harrowing adventures of Stacey and Jacob in the wake of Jacob's brush with death. Ever since he lost his memory, Jacob hasn't been able to remember Stacey - his own soul mate. He leaves Massachusetts, returning to his childhood home in Colorado, hoping to jog his memory. What he remembers is Kira, his ex-girlfriend. As Jacob works to piece together his past, will there be room for Stacey in his future?
REVIEWS:
"The half-million readers of Laurie Faria Stolarz’s paranormal mystery series will be happy with this shift to graphic style, offering as it does the pleasure of putting faces on characters, its visualized eeriness and vibrant displays of emotion...The graphic style allows Stolarz to distill the story while simultaneously dropping hints about Stacey and Jacob’s supernatural talents, luring new readers to the series." - Kirkus Reviews
"Taking Stolarz’s Blue Is for Nightmares series into the graphic-novel realm is a bold idea, and it pays off in this morbidly entertaining and surprisingly romantic page-turner." - Booklist
“This scary and romantic story, with its larger-than-life emotions and darkly twisting plot, lends itself well to the graphic novel format. The teenage characters, their dialogue, and their interactions are well imagined and ably captured. And when you are not enjoying the great dialogue or fantastic artwork, it is fun to pore over the little details…BLACK IS FOR BEGINNINGS serves both to draw new teen readers to the series and to supply existing fans with interesting additional background and never-before-seen details. A winning formula!” – TeenReads
ABOUT DEADLY LITTLE LIES:
Last fall, sixteen-year-old Camelia fell for Ben, a new boy at school who had a very mysterious gift – psychometry, the ability to sense the future through touch. But just as Camelia and Ben's romance began to heat up, he abruptly left town. Brokenhearted, Camelia has spent the last few months studying everything she can about psychometry and experiencing strange brushes with premonition. Camelia wonders if Ben's abilities have somehow been transferred to her.
Ben returns to school, but he remains aloof, and Camelia can't get close enough to share her secret with him. Camelia makes the painful decision to let him go and move on. Adam, the hot new guy at Knead, seems good for her in ways Ben wasn't. But when Camelia and Adam start dating, a surprising love triangle results. A chilling sequence of events uncovers secrets from Ben’s past – and Adam's. Someone is lying, and it's up to Camelia to figure out who – before it's too late.

Directions on how to bring your own psychometric senses to fruition:
1. Make yourself comfortable in a place that feels “sacred” to you. For some it’s outside, surrounded by nature; for others it’s a favorite chair or surrounded by candles; for me, it’s wherever I’m doing pottery.
Remember, this takes practice and a bit of experimenting. The goal is to begin tuning in to your own inner awareness and your ability of perception. What works for me is saying a question aloud in my head, and then sculpting out the answer – using my power of touch in a creative and organic way.

4. Close your eyes again and concentrate on this object. Be aware of any thoughts or feelings that come about as a result of holding this object. Talk those ideas through, even if they seem silly or insignificant, but never make information up.

Daytrippin' in Portland
What a wonderful non-writing weekend! Jesse and I decided to have a tourist weekend here in Portland! Ready? Here we go!!!
We started off at the zoo:
Despite the cold, we headed to the Japanese Gardens. Wow. It was breathtaking.
Warning: You know those people who have cool hats that make them look cute and stylish? Yeah, I'm not one of those people.
Next up, the Rose Garden. I can't WAIT to go back in the spring. Although I did manage to find a few roses still poking around:
Pitcock Mansion was closed. But we tried to break in anyway. And the city view was amazing:
We ended at VooDoo Doughnuts. I got a "Portland Creme", my son got a "Butterfingering" and I can't remember what Jesse and Sophie got, but it was GOOD!
So yeah! Tourists in our own town! Super fun!!!

Book Signing: Starring David Levithan
The extremely cool David Levithan visited Portland today! Me and the other Portland Kidlit writers went to his event at The Children's Place Bookstore. Which is also extremely cool!
We weren't able to get everyone for the photo, but some of us were still able to snap a pick of the crew. And yes, that is the National Book Award nominees Laini Taylor and Jim Di Bartolo.
My friend Jennie drove ALL the way up from Ashland to see him!
Afterwards, me and the amazing Christine Fletcher (Ten Cents A Dance) went out for a snack. Oh, look what she found!

Why Twitter Rocks!
I haven't been fair to Twitter lately. Yes, it distracts me from my work. Constantly. But today it made up for it... BIG TIME!!!
I had one of those "WHY DON'T I BACK UP MY FILES?" moments. My laptop crashed--with 15 finished manuscripts, over a dozen partial manuscripts and an uncountable amounts of pictures. None of which were backed up.
I tried to remain calm. I patiently waited for it restart and reload. But it went black. It wouldn't even turn on. Slowly, I started to FREAKING LOSE IT!!!!!
Praying to God, I promised to backup my files if given another chance. I was sweet to my kids, even nice to my awful dog. My husband got on the phone as I raced around the house looking for my car keys. I was taking it to Best Buy. Surely they'd know how to fix it!!!!
Just as I was texting my friend Trish and hysterically sending messages to Twitter... my husband yells out that he fixed it.
MY FILES--THEY LIVE!!!! Dudes, seriously. Back up your files. Mine are now safely loaded onto an external hard drive.
Anyway, when I went back to Twitter I saw all the awesome tweets from people!! Okay, this may sound lame... but I never felt so loved in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got advice, prayers, hugs. I mean, it was overwhelming support. Which as a writer... meant everything to me.
So thank you, Twitter. You freaking rock!

So, if you want to join me.... Ready, set, GO!!!!

Life without spell check
Just before I handed in my 3rd Naughty List novel, the most horrible thing ever happened. My spell check stopped working. I had to type the last 40 pages of my manuscript without squiggly lines. Without a way to make sure I spelled "science" right. And then I realized... my computer has made me stupid.
I found myself googling the simplest words--I'd lost all confidence! I had to comb through the book and find places where I wrote "her" instead of "here". I even spelled my character's name wrong!!!!!
Luckily I still managed to get it done and turned it (thank you, twittercation). But wow. I might have to start using my kid's 3rd grade spelling guide.
Am I the only writer that can't spell??

Day SEVEN without Twitter
Yesterday I hit my breaking point. I sent an email to a friend telling them that I was giving up on writing. That there was no point. That I was going to rewind time three years and be without any knowledge of the writing business. Because I'm a loser.
The response I got was: You have four freaking books coming out. So shut up.
That was a nice answer. So I promptly shut off my computer and went to the Science center. They had an exhibit about controlling fear. It was so fun!! I have to say, I was a total wimp!!!! And my husband wasn't much better (sorry, Jesse!). Yeah, ask him if he'll stick his hand in the Scorpion cage. See what he says. :-)
Kids loved it though! Oh, I even almost got my head chopped off in the guillotine. I screamed when it came down. Yes. I totally cracked.

Jesse--before he lost his head:
I don't know. I kind of worked it:
The fear of falling. Yeah, I didn't do that crap.
Then the kids got shot up into space!
After that we went to a mall where they had an indoor ice skating rink, but decided we'd have to come back another day. We weren't really dressed for it, and besides, my feet were KILLING ME!
Anyway, Day Seven and it's the last Twitterless day. But can I really go back? They say you can never go home again...

Day SIX without *eyetwitch* Twitter
I finished and handed in a novel. I cleaned my house. I actually PUT AWAY the laundry. I'm working on two different new books.
And yet, without Twitter... it means nothing. It means nothing.
(PS. If you'd like, there is a Naughty List giveaway on Goodreads! You should enter!!!) :-)

Day FIVE without Twitter
When I'm not twittering, I'm writing. Which has been wonderful. Except for these unexpected side effects:
-Sore wrists
-Swollen fingers
-Aching low back
-Right eye dilated bigger than left
-Migranes
-Loneliness
This is withdrawal, isn't it? How many more days until I can come back??

Day THREE without Twitter
Oh, God. Help me! Help me!! Okay, I'm not that bad, but really... this is pretty isolating. In fact, I'm not even sure if anyone reads this anymore. Is there anybody out there? If no one is @ing me, do I exist???
Excuse me while I ponder this:

I won't even tell you how much writing I've gotten done. Let's just say it's a lot. So there's that. Too bad my WIP can't @ me and tell me funny things...

The day isn't even over yet and I've revised like a hundred pages. WOW! Thanks Twitter for sucking away my life for the past few months!
Imagine what I could have accomplished with all of that time. In fact, wait. I'll imagine for you... (cut to fuzzy dream sequence)
THINGS I WOULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT MY TWITTER ADDICTION:
-wrote three more novels. Not kidding.
-painted the living room, kitchen cabinets and bathroom.
-installed hard wood floors
-made more friends of the flesh and blood variety
-grown out my hair instead of being too busy to care
-made paper airplanes with my kids
-GONE CAMPING
-gotten a second job--as a movie star
-taught myself to bake
and finally-ran into a burning building to save eight children, two dogs and a goldfish.
WOW!!! What could you have done without Twitter??? Maybe it's time you imagine....
And be share to check in with some of our other twittercation peeps. See what Nova did today:
http://novaren.wordpress.com/
Also, book 2 in The Naughty List series: SO MANY BOYS is up for preorder!!! It comes out June 10th, 2010! You can find it here. It's also on goodreads!

Day ONE without Twitter
This isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Luckily the wonderful Nova Ren Suma has kept me inspired with her mad writing skills. But what I've noticed is that without Twitter... I feel sort of lonely.
Is that weird?? I feel weird.
See you all on day 2!!!

I thought I was the only one!
My deadline is looming and I still have half a book to write. Sweat is forming on my brow. My throat is dry. I’ll never make this deadline! I’ll have to write 52 pages every day for the next two weeks if I hope to finish.
Wait. Let me check my Twitter account.
Yeah, does this happen to you? I thought I was the only one that suffered from internet addiction while writing. Turns out, I’m not! In fact, I’d say it’s an epidemic among authors and artists. I wonder if it has to do with the isolation of writing and art—the time spent staring at screen, while just at the bottom, just one click away, is a never-ending party with all the cool people you know!
It’s like they never sleep! There is always someone around to talk to! But then… there’s that deadline…
So in the interest of meeting deadlines (or even for NaNo) author Nova Ren Suma and I decided to make next week a Twitter-free environment. From November 1st to November 7th, we will not Twitter or Facebook. Why? Because we have a problem and we’re not afraid to admit it.
Would you like to join this Twittercation? Do it! You can! I know you’re strong enough. Sure, will the yahoo headlines still tempt you? Will blogs somehow become your only lifeline to the outside world? Maybe. But you can beat them. You can beat the internet beast and finish your work!!!
If you’d like to join, find us on Twitter and feel free (pun intended) to blog about it! This is going to be the most productive week ever. I might even have time to clean my house!!!
Comment if you're in!!!

Sign up for SCBWI NY!!!!! Today!

I just signed up for this year's SCBWI Annual Winter Conference! Have you heard about it? You can register HERE. I'll be live blogging it with Team Blog--and just to prepare, I got a makeover. Well, sort of. I'm going back to blonde, but since I'd colored my hair so dark, it's a process. What color will it be at conference time? You should come and find out! Kidding. I'm sure it'll be on the blog.
Anyway, there are some really interesting speakers to look forward too! Like Libba Bray! And Ben Schrank--president of Razorbill. Razorbill's nice. :-) To read more about the lineup, click HERE.
Also they have these amazing intensives before the conference that I'm really looking forward to.
And if nothing else, NYC!! In January? I mean, what better time?? haha. (On a sidenote, I left NY when I turned 21 because I couldn't stand being cold. Welcome home.) Plus The Naughty List comes out on February 4th, but I'm going to try to get early copies. Shh! Don't tell anyone.
So register today HERE!!!! And I'll see you there! Oh, and here's my hair so far: (Remember, a work in progress)
Don't forget to enter my contest to win a signed ARC of The Naughty List and a Naughty List T-shirt! You'll look so Strawberry Smoothie in it!

Book Signing: Starring Jay Asher
Best selling author Jay Asher spoke today at the Eugene Public Library--a pretty impressive establishment. The turnout was amazing! My friend and kid's former babysitter, Jessica, happens to be a HUGE fan of Jay so she and I decided to stop by and check it out!!!

His speeches were inspiring, sometimes funny. But the best part for me had nothing to do with Jay's presentation (sorry!) As I was signing an ARC of THE NAUGHTY LIST for Jessica, the girl next to me said, "Did you write THE NAUGHTY LIST?"

She knew the name!! Just by the cover, she knew the name. I was all, "Um... yes." And she told me that she'd seen it online and was dying for it!!! My first random in-person comment! I was giddy!!! So I signed a copy for her.
After Jay's signing (oh, yeah. Was that why I was there?) he was kind enough to give out a few copies of my book to his fans!!! As you can see, he was happy to promote it!
Thanks, Jay! And of course if you haven't seen him give a speech before, you really should check it out. It's great for writers and fans!

For meee????
I was so excited the other day when my friend over at The Compulsive Reader tweeted to let me know that she stumbled across an ad for The Naughty List. Wait. What???? Where???

My little heart beat quickly. She tweeted me a picture! And OMG! It is! It's an ad for The Naughty List in the back of someone else's book! Isn't that so weird and AWESOME???

I'm dying of excitement. The book is a Razorbill title called The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate. And in the back... yep! Me!
*faints
*wakes up!
It's the little things... Oh, and an important announcement coming soon.....

Book Signing: Starring Jeff Kinney!!!!!
So when Jeff Kinney--author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series--comes to town, people show up. Weird, right??

Hundreds of people. HUNDREDS! And a big, giant Wimpy bus later, we got our books signed. And even though I only got to talk with him for a few minutes, Jeff Kinney seems like a rockin' guy. We had like fifteen books with us and he didn't even bat an eyelash.

My only regret? The picture the employee took of me and Jeff didn't come out. Imagaine how bummed out I was!! My camera=sucky. Sigh.

Book Signing: Starring LK Madigan
WHAT AN AWESOME DAY!!!! Today, friend and local author LK Madigan had a fantastic book signing!!!! Her book FLASH BURNOUT (omg, it's so good you have to read it!) is out now and SOLD OUT the entire stock in Powell's. The place was packed, like over fifty people packed!

LK started out with an amazing speech. In fact, she had me and Lisa Schroeder in tears. It was so touching, thoughtful, sweet. She told us about her journey, offered advice and threw chocolate at us!

Not just any chocolates. Chocolates with her book cover on them from A1wrappers!!!!! I NEED to do that!

Then she had a teenager (totally handsome, readers!) who came up and read from the book. We were roaring with laughter.

So many amazing writers, illustrators and artists in attendence. In fact, we even got a view as to what Clementine Pie will look like when she gets older! I think Laini and Jim will be proud. :-)

Well, it was an awesome book signing with awesome friends and I cannot WAIT for everyone to get FLASH BURNOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Surprise Party!!!!
Tonight I met my friends in NE Portland for a surprise party for our girl CYNDI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was nice to see Matt Holm and Cyndi. Oh, and the always adorable Bridget and Barrett. Jim Di Bortolo and Laini were there with their cutie "pie" Clementine. And Johanna and her husband Gabe were having fun and rounded out the crew!

We were at a really nice restaurant called An Ju, where I couldn't tell what anything was on the menu, but it was all super tasty. And inexpensive! Score!

Cyndi got some great one of a kind gifts (the perks of being friends with artists) but I was disappointed I couldn't find Erotic Shakespeare magnets for her. Darn.

It was an awesome night with amazing friends and again, I'm so lucky to live here. :-)
A Weekend of Excitement Planned!
Yay! I LOVE weekends of excitement!!!! I have a busy weekend ahead me, all good stuff! Friday night is top-secret. Sorry! But there will be pictures.
