A Little Something Like Home

I had the best weekend. I got to see an old friend get married, and I got to visit Ashland, Oregon for the first time. Sigh. I'm so sad it's over.

I grew up in NY, but my second home is Arizona. I live in Oregon now. (Confused? Wait, there's more). My friend Misty invited me to her wedding in Ashland. She's been friends with Jesse since growing up in California, and we became friends when I lived in Arizona. Same with all the guys.

They are freaking amazing people and I can't believe we all got to chill out again. Seeing old friends reminds you of who you really are, you know?

Anyway, here are a few pics!

Wedding Eve:

The bride and groom: Misty and Mike!

Brian, Dusty and Jesse

A Shakespeare Festival. No, serioulsy. A FREAKING Shakespeare Festival!!

The wedding took place at this beautiful spot outdoors. So pretty!

After the wedding me, Jesse, Brian and Heidi stopped for drinks...

I even bumped into a few of my favorite writers!! Christy Raedeke and Jennie Englund!

Then after a gorgeous reception, we went to a bonfire. FUN!!!

And Joey finally got that freaking bandana he begged for all weekend. Long story.

So how was your Memorial Day weekend?

Published by Simon Pulse, a division of Simon & Schuster. ISBN-10: 1442406593; ISBN-13: 978-1442406599.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jennifer Echols grew up in a small town on a beautiful lake in Alabama--a setting that has inspired many of her books. Always interested in creative writing, she finished her first (and still unpublished) novel soon after graduating with a degree in English from Auburn University at age 20. She worked as an editor for newspapers, a writer for business publications, and a writing instructor for three major universities, completed a master's degree in English, and finished the coursework for a PhD in genre studies before selling a book. Since then, she has written many young adult novels for Simon & Schuster, including Major Crush, which won the National Reader's Choice Award, and Going Too Far, which is a finalist in the 2010 RITA, the National Reader's Choice Award, and the Book Buyer's Best. Her next novel, Forget You, will be released on July 20. Currently she works as a copyeditor and lives in Birmingham with her husband and son. Please visit her online at jennifer-echols.com.

And I got a chance to interview Jennifer too!

Okay, first question. If this were high school, which senior superlative in the yearbook would you score?

I was actually two senior superlatives with the same boy. In the “Most Academic” photo, he’s throwing a paper airplane while I’m reading a copy of Seventeen behind my English textbook. In the “Most Likely to Succeed” photo, we’re playing Monopoly. He has a PhD in engineering, so I guess we both did okay. And yes, he was a good friend and absolutely adorable.

What is one thing you wish you would have done when you were younger? For me, it’s that I never studied abroad. How about you?

I wish I’d learned to surf—I grew up on the lake instead of the ocean—but I am still going to get to this soon.

Now here’s the self-promotion part: Can you please tell us all about your book? We have some book shopping to do!

Endless Summer is about a tomboy who decides to go girly to catch her childhood crush. But the harder she tries, the more her crush’s younger brother tries to stop her. And soon she suspects she’s gone after the wrong boy! It’s all played out during a long, hot summer on the lake like the one where I grew up, and I promise you will close the book laughing.

So, say your book just got picked up for a movie (congratulations!) Who’s playing your MC?

I thought Ashley Tisdale was perfect, but a reader tells me she’s gotten too old! Stop aging, Ashley Tisdale!

If you could take one literary character to prom, who would it be, and why?

I just finished a wonderful YA romantic suspense, The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting, and I would just die if Jay asked me to prom…but then I would be just like one of those other girls in the book who is after him!

And finally, since all of the other questions were so serious… What do you hope teens take away from your book?

The main character, Lori, is a fun-loving optimist. I tell people she’s the character I’ve written who’s the most like me, but the truth is that I try to be more like her and have a sunny outlook on life. Everything is better when you make an effort to be happy.

Thanks so much for stopping by! And everyone, pick up your copy of Endless Summer today!!

Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit: Starring Jeri Smith-Ready

I'm very excited to bring you today's girlfriend! Jeri's book SHADE was just released, and man oh man... is it GOOD!!

Let's hear more about it:

SHADE
Simon Pulse Release Date: May 4, 2010
Jeri Smith-Ready, www.jerismithready.com, http://twitter.com/jsmithready, www.facebook.com/jerismithready

About the Book:

Love ties them together.
Death can't tear them apart.

Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.

Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.

Well, sort of.

Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan’s violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura’s new friend Zachary is so understanding—and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.

As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart…and clues to the secret of the Shift.

About the Author:
Award-winning author Jeri Smith-Ready lives in Maryland with her husband, two cats, and the world’s goofiest greyhound.

Jeri's plans to save the earth were ruined when she realized she was more of a “problem maker” than a problem solver. To stay out of trouble, she keeps her Drama Drive strictly fictional. Her friends and family appreciate that.

When not writing, Jeri she can usually be found—well, thinking about writing, or on Twitter. Like her characters, she loves music, movies, and staying up very, very late.

Jeri loves to hear from readers, so please visit her at www.jerismithready.com, or even better, on Facebook (www.facebook.com/jerismithready) or Twitter (http://twitter.com/jsmithready), where she spends way too much time.

Praise for SHADE:
“Shade is a hauntingly good story and an intriguing beginning to a new series. Jeri Smith-Ready proves again why she is one of my very favorite reads! — PC Cast, New York Times-bestselling author of the House of Night series

“The perfect combination of mystery, ghosts and romance, Shade left me breathless.” — Lisa
Schroeder, author of I Heart You, You Haunt Me and Chasing Brooklyn

Jeri even took the time to answer a few questions:

Okay, first question. If this were high school, which senior superlative in the yearbook would you score?

Most Likely to Say Something Inappropriate

What is one thing you wish you would have done when you were younger? For me, it’s that I never studied abroad. How about you?

I wish I’d taken piano lessons. (My parents bought me a piano, but no lessons.) I was able to teach myself a few songs, but I wish that once I had a job, I would’ve spent some of the money learning how to play that thing.

Now here’s the self-promotion part: Can you please tell us all about your book? We have some book shopping to do!

SHADE comes out Tuesday, May 4, from Simon Pulse (although it’s already been spotted at several Borders over the weekend). It’s about a girl (Aura Salvatore) who can see ghosts (as can everyone born after her) and isn’t thrilled about it, until her boyfriend dies and becomes a ghost. There’s also a cute Scottish guy who is all too willing to comfort Aura in her grief.

So, say your book just got picked up for a movie (congratulations!) Who’s playing your MC?

If I could merge Selena Gomez and Ellen Page, that would be the perfect person. (Note to self: learn genetic recombination.)

If you could take one literary character to prom, who would it be, and why?

Ooh, ooh, can it be one of my own? Because Zachary wears a kilt to the prom in SHADE’s sequel, SHIFT, and I absolutely want to be the girl with him—you know, the one with the smug look on her face. Is that wrong? Okay, then I don’t want to be right. (Let’s all refer back to Question 1 about the yearbook, shall we?)

And finally, since all of the other questions were so serious… What do you hope teens take away from your book?

First of all, I hope they’re entertained, because a book is nothing without a good story. I also hope that those who have lost someone they loved will feel a kindred spirit in Aura and maybe find some hope and comfort in the way she copes.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Jeri! And everyone, pick up SHADE today!! :-)

SO MANY BOYS-Teaser

Since we're getting close to the release of SO MANY BOYS, I thought I'd share a little bit of the opening scene with you! This won't spoil the end of The Naughty List, so if you haven't read it yet, no worries. (although maybe you could read it soonish?)

Hope you like it! :-)

ASSIGNMENT 1
1:00 a.m., September 12

A branch splintered under the operative’s heavy boot, cracking loud enough to make her pause. After a quick look around Riley Richards’s back lawn, she continued her path toward his halfopen bedroom window.

Even from the yard, she could hear their soft murmurs. She crouched down in the wet soil of the flower bed, taking out the night-vision goggles she’d stolen. Silently she clicked on the viewfinder and peered in.

The suspect, Riley, was in there along with his accomplice, Megan Wright. They were sitting on his bed (fully clothed), talking. Talking?

The operative narrowed her eyes and shifted in the dirt. This was not what she’d anticipated. Proof might take longer than previously thought, and the black latex jumpsuit she’d snatched was getting filthy. When she’d found the SOS files and gone through them, the operative had seen a problem—a reason why SOS wasn’t as effective as it could’ve been. The society was set up to be secret, completely undercover. And that was the problem. It left no room for intimidation. And if the operative hoped to make SOS her own success—and outshine Tessa Crimson—she’d have to fix that. She had a plan.

Clicking off a few stills, the operative listened patiently. Megan was looking sideways at Riley as they sat hip to hip on his navy blue comforter.

“So, do you want to work on that chemistry lab?” Megan asked, twisting a long strand of blonde hair around her finger.

The left side of Riley’s mouth twitched. “Not really.”

“But I thought you said—”

“I wanted to see you,” he interrupted. “But I knew you wouldn’t if I didn’t say it was for school.”

“Jenn’s my friend,” Megan whispered. “You know that.” She shifted uncomfortably, moving away from the suspect. “I shouldn’t even be here right now.”

But when Megan didn’t get up to leave, the operative tensed, finger poised over the viewfinder. No matter how Riley got her to his house, Megan obviously wanted to be there. This was about to become a full-fledged cheat.

“I’m sorry,” Riley said, reaching out to touch Megan’s arm. “I know this is hard, but…I like you, Meg. Don’t you like me?”

The operative paused on the record button as she suddenly became fascinated with the developing relationship. Sure, Riley was propositioning Meg, but not really—not in a way that offered real proof. Liking someone wasn’t the same as adultery. Not unless Megan agreed to go through with it. Would she?

“I…” Megan stopped long enough to make it clear she didn’t want to say what she was about to. “I should go.”

“Please,” Riley murmured, taking her hand. “Don’t leave yet.”

Outside, the operative watched, knots forming in her stomach as she waited to see if they’d cheat. In the SOS files she’d found the official tally sheets. Tessa Crimson had caught more than two hundred cheaters. The operative tightened her jaw. It would be hard to beat Tessa at her own game when she played it so damn well.

Just then Megan’s ring tone filled the darkened room with the latest drama-club anthem. Megan reached into her pocket to look at her caller ID, then drew in a quick breath.

“It’s Jenn,” she said.

Riley let his hand drop from Megan’s. Megan clicked off her phone and slid it self-consciously back into her jeans.

Riley sighed. “I’ll walk you out.”

The operative was disappointed. She chewed hard on the corner of her thumbnail, lost in thought. If she was going to take over SOS and make it what it should be, she’d need to out-spy the former team. But this mission hadn’t offered the sort of evidence she’d need to confirm Jenn’s suspicions, and more troubling than that was the fact that Megan had resisted. Cheaters weren’t supposed to resist. Until now, there’d been a 100 percent infidelity rate. The operative was counting on that to continue.

As soon as Riley’s bedroom door had closed behind the suspects, the operative stood up in the flower bed and slid her body through the open window.

Ouch! She looked down to see that the fabric around her thigh had snagged on the sill and ripped a hole in her suit, leaving a long scratch. Irritated, she straightened, glancing around the room for Riley’s computer. When she spotted it, she walked over and inserted the CD she’d hidden in her cleavage. When it was in, the operative clicked Run. It would copy Riley’s entire hard drive—every program, every picture, every application. There must be something of value in there, something incriminating.

The operative tapped her boot as she waited. The computer beeped, and she bent down to look at the screen. Wipe complete.

She hit the space bar a few times, but nothing else came up. “Shit,” she murmured, reaching over to eject the CD. She examined the disc carefully. Oh, no! She’d accidentally inserted the data eraser. She shook her head, reaching up to bite her nail again as she considered her problem.

She looked around the room for any other collectible data, hoping the mission wouldn’t be a total loss. Then she saw it. Riley’s phone was resting on his dresser.

Walking over, she removed the battery and took out the SIM card, slipping it into her bra once she had it. With a satisfied sigh, she pulled a tiny listening device from her pocket, looking it over as she traipsed toward the open window. She brought it up to her lips and kissed it, leaving a tiny smudge of red across the surface. Then she peeled back the adhesive and stuck it under the edge of Riley’s desk as she passed.

Riley and Megan might not have been cheating, but there was clearly intent. The operative needed this confirmation. She would just have to keep watching them, because sooner or later, they’d slip up.

Cheaters always did.

But when Maddy’s boyfriend cheats on her, nothing bad comes his way. That’s why Maddy starts the Karma Club, to clean up the messes that the universe has left behind and get back at the people who have wronged them. Sometimes, though, it isn’t wise to meddle with the universe. It turns out Karma often has plans of its own.

Praise:

"Written with wit and panache. Readers will have fun with this one, and it might make them think a little, too."

“Fresh, funny and engaging. This is one YA debut you won’t want to miss.”
-Alyson Noël, NYT bestselling author of The Immortals series

"A well-paced comedy, with a nice balance of cinematic physical humor and genuine teen emotions."
--Publisher's Weekly

Author Bio:

Jessica Brody is the author of two books for adults. The Karma Club is her first book for teens. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California where she is working on her next novel. Despite what some people from her high school might claim, she has never sought revenge on an ex-boyfriend. Visit her online at: http://www.jessicabrody.com/

Trailer:

Free Flip Giveaway:

To celebrate the release of The Karma Club on April 27, Jessica is giving away FOUR Flip Video Cameras (as well as TONS of other cool prizes!) on her site. Visit her website, http://www.jessicabrody.com for all the details and to enter to win!

Interview:
1. Okay, first question. If this were high school, which senior superlative in the yearbook would you score?

Best multi-tasker. I’m actually watching TV, texting, chewing gum, and knitting a sweater for the neighbor’s cat while I answer this question.

2. What is one thing you wish you would have done when you were younger? For me, it’s that I never studied abroad. How about you?

I wish I had been more active in sports when I was younger. Then maybe I’d have an easier time getting my butt to the gym as an adult!

3. Now here’s the self-promotion part: Can you please tell us all about your book? We have some book shopping to do!

But of course! The Karma Club is about three teen girls who decide they’re tired of waiting for Karma to take its course so they vow to take Karma into their own hands by getting revenge on the people who have wronged them. But they soon discover when you mess with Karma, Karma messes back! Shop away!

4. So, say your book just got picked up for a movie (congratulations!) Who’s playing your MC?

Oh, I always love this question. I have multiple people in mind. I could easily see someone like Emma Roberts, Shailene Woodley or Selena Gomez playing the role of Maddy. But I also LOVE the actress that plays Maddy in my book trailer. Her name is Madisen Hill (she even has the same first name!) and she’s simply adorable. The minute she stepped into the audition I knew she was the one I would cast. She fits the main character perfectly! You can check out the trailer at: http://www.jessicabrody.com/

5. If you could take one literary character to prom, who would it be, and why?

Um, Edward Cullen of course! Although after prom, I’d probably ask him to come back to my house for a snack, a movie, coffee, and then who knows where it might lead! I’m not to be held responsible (or accountable) for fictional dates with hot vampires.

6. And finally, since all of the other questions were so serious… What do you hope teens take away from your book?

First and foremost, I write my novels to be entertaining and fun. So I really do hope that teens enjoy the book and have fun reading it. But I also like to make sure there’s something to think about in each of my books as well. So if readers come away from this story with a new outlook on life and why things sometimes happen the way they do, then I would be one happy writer!

Thanks, Jessica! And everyone, pick up a copy of The Karma Club today!

Today me, Lisa Schroeder, and LK Madigan did a YA panel down at the library in Corvallis, Oregon! It was so much fun! And thanks to our friend Bryan Bliss for setting it up!

I got to show off my covers--the covers I described as portraying the desperate struggle between life and death. And then I think I may have compared my road to publication to a family trip to Disney World.

Our girls showed up! Love ya, Ashley and Sarah!

One of our favorite bloggers from The Eager Readers not only showed up, she brought flowers!! AW!!!!

Bryan is obviously stoked being this close to me. It must be my amazing charm (don't comment anything mean, Bryan!)

And finally we headed out to dinner (my feet are sore from walking around!) :-)

It was a wonderful day and a wonderful event. I had SO MUCH FUN!! Thanks to everyone who came out!! It was so great that I hope I can make it down for the release of SO MANY BOYS! And then I'm getting a hot dog :-)
